生命的意义

生命不会永远存在，它毫无情面，滚滚向前。父母的生命通过我们得以延续，而我们的生命则延续在我们的孩子身上。我们建立的制度会延续下去，而我们则通过这些制度而延续。我们所塑造的美，不会因为我们生命的结束而暗淡。我们的肉体会消失，我们的双手会枯萎，但我们所创造的真善美却会永存。

不要虚度光阴，浪费生命去积聚那些只能化为灰尘的东西。与其过多地追求物质享受，哪如去追求理想，因为只有理想才会赋予生命以意义，使之具有永恒的价值。有了爱，一所房子就变成了家；有了正直，一个城市就变成了社会；有了真理，一堆红砖绿瓦就变成了学校；有了宗教，一座最寒酸的大厦就会变成一座圣殿；有了正义，人类漫长的努力就会变成文明。把这些加在一起，加以提升，使之超越现在的不完美，加上救赎人类的美好愿景，永远脱离贫困和纷争，我们就会拥有一个充满绚丽的希望之光的未来。

Life is never just being. It is becoming a relentless,flowing on. Our parents live on through us, and we will live on through our children. The institutions we build endure, and we will endure through them.The beauty we fashion cannot be dimmed by death. Our flesh may perish, our hands will wither, but that which they create in beauty and goodness and truth lives on for all time to come.

Don't spend and waste your lives accumulating objectsthat will only turn to dust and ashes. Pursue not so much the material as the ideal, for ideals alone invest life with meaning and are of enduring worth. Addlove to a house and you have a home. Add righteousness to a city and you have a community. Add truth to a pile of red brick and you have a school. Add religion to the humblest of edifices and you have a sanctuary. Add justice to the far-flung round of human endeavor and you have civilization.
