我很富有

我是一位单亲母亲，有四个小孩子，从事着一份报酬很低的工作。钱总是很紧张，但我们头上有屋顶，桌上有食物，背上有衣服，如果说不富裕，但总是衣食无忧。我的孩子们不知道我家的状况，还以为我很富有，对此我一直很高兴。

圣诞期间，我们没有钱买太多礼物，决定举办一个家庭聚会来庆祝。对于孩子们来说，最大的激动来自于这次有趣的圣诞聚会。

他们好几周前就开始规划，互相询问大家想要什么礼物。很幸运，我攒下一百二十美元，用来互买礼物。

这一天到了。我给每个孩子二十美元，提醒他们寻找那些大约四美元的礼物。随后大家分散开。我们有两小时购物时间，约好在圣诞老人作坊集合。

驱车回家，人人都情绪高涨，除了小女儿金杰。她异常安静，她的小包瘪瘪的，只有几枚糖果，五毛钱的糖果！我很生气，但忍着什么也没说，一直回到家。我把她叫进卧室，关上门，准备发作。下面是她告诉我的情况：“我到处闲逛，思考着买什么，我在“捐赠树”旁停下来，读着上面的小小卡片。其中一张是写给一个四岁小女孩的，她圣诞节只想要一个布娃娃。我把卡片摘下来，给她买了一个布娃娃。我们拥有那么多，而她却一无所有。”

我从没有像那天那样感觉自己如此富有。

I was a single parent of four small children, working at a low-paid job. Money was always tight but we had a roof over our heads, food on the table, clothes on our backs and if not a lot , always enough. Not knowing we were poor, my kids just thought I was rich. I’ve always been glad about that.

It was Christmas time, and although there wasn’t money for a lot of gifts, we planned to celebrate with a family party. But the big excitement for the kids was the fun of Christmas party.

They planned weeks ahead of time, asking each other what they wanted for Christmas. Fortunately, I had save $120 for presents to share by all five of us.

The big arrived. Igave each kid a twenty-dollar bill and reminded them to look for gifts of about four dollars each. Then everyone scattered. We had two hours to shop; and we would meet back at the “Santa’s workshop”.

Driving home everyone was in high Christmas spirits, except my younger daughter, Ginger, who was unusually quiet. She had only one small, flat bag with a few candies---fifty cents candies! I was so angry, but I didn’t say anything until we got home. I called her into my bedroom and closed the door, ready to be angry again. This is what she told me: “I was looking around thinking of what to buy, and I stopped to read the little cards on the “Giving Trees”. One was for a little girl, four years old, and all she wanted for Christmas was a doll. So I took the card off the tree and bought the doll for her. We have so much and she doesn’t have anything.”

I never felt so rich as I did that day.
