【赫临译笔】我为你自豪 - 心云驛站

四十三年前，我是马里内特一个十二岁的小男孩。一位老太太是我送报纸线路上的一个客户。一个星期六下午，我和一个朋友漫不经心从灌木丛中往她家屋顶上扔石子。我们的目的是观察这些石子如何顺着屋顶的斜坡变成颗颗飞弹，在滚落到屋顶边缘的瞬间，像滑过天空的彗星那样射入院中。

我找到一粒非常光滑的石子，把它扔了出去。然而，这粒石子太光滑了，当我投掷时，它从我手中滑脱，径直飞向一扇窗子。我们怕被捉住，比从屋顶飞落的任何一颗飞弹都要快地逃离了现场。

然而，过了几天，当我确信自己没有被发现时，我开始为老太太的不幸感到内疚。我每天给她送报时，她依然笑脸相迎。

我决心把送报挣得钱攒起来。三周后，我攒了七美元，我把钱装进一个信封，内装一张便条，便条上写：我为打碎你的玻璃深感抱歉，希望这些钱能够支付修玻璃的费用。

我等到天黑，偷偷溜进老太太家，把信封放在门口。第二天，我递给老太太报纸时，她给了我一个温暖的微笑，我笑着回应了她。她感谢我给她送来的报纸，并给了我一个袋子，说“我这儿有些饼干送给你。”我谢了她，一边继续自己的行程，一边吃着饼干。

吃过几块后，我摸到一个信封，掏了出来。打开一看，我震惊了。里面装着我那七美元和一张便条，上面写着：“ 我为你自豪。”

Forty-three years ago, I was a 12-year-old in Marinette. An old lady was a customer on my paper route. On a Saturday afternoon, a friend and I were mindlessly throwing rocks onto the roof of the old lady’s house from the bushes. The object of our play was to observe how the rocks changed to missiles as they rolled to the roof’s edges and shot out into the yard like comets.

I found a perfectly smooth rock and sent it for the ride. The stone was too smooth,however, so it slipped from my hands as I let it go and headed straight for a window. We were so scared of being caught that we took off more quickly than any of our missiles that flew off her roof.

However, a few days later, when I was sure that I hadn’t been discovered, I started to feel guilty for her misfortunate. She still greeted me with a smile each day when Igave her the paper.

I made up my mind that I would save my paper delivery money. Three weeks later, I had seven dollars and put the money on an envelope with a note saying that I was sorry for breaking her window and hoped that the money would cover the cost for repairing it.

I waited until it was dark, sneaked up to the lady’s house, and put the envelope by the door. The next day, I handed the lady the paper and returned the warm smile which I was receiving from her. She thanked me for the paper and gave me a bag, saying,“Here, I have some cookies for you.” I thanked her and began to eat the cookies as I continued my route.

After several cookies, I felt an envelope and pulled it out of the bag. When I opened it, Iwas shocked. Inside was the seven dollars and a short note, saying “I’m proud of you.”
