眼泪的奇迹

这是干季里最热的一天。已经近一个月没有见到雨了。庄稼快枯死了。溪流早已回归地下。如果最近再不下雨，我们会颗粒无收。就是在这一天，我懂得了分享的真正意义，亲眼目睹了人生唯一的一次奇迹。
我正在厨房里准备午饭时，看见六岁的儿子比利朝着小树林走去，。几分钟后，他消失在树林中，一会儿，又朝着家跑回来。
我认为甭管他在干什么，任务已完成，又去做三明治了。然而，一会儿以后，他又走出来，朝着小树林,步伐缓慢而坚毅。这个活动持续了一个小时：小心翼翼地走向树林，跑着回家。最后，我再也忍不住了，蹑手蹑脚地走出来，跟着他走去。
我探头窥视时，见到了最惊人的一幕：在他面前隐约可见几只大鹿，比利径直走向它们。我看见一只很小的鹿躺在地上，很显然已经脱水，轻度中暑，只见它费力地抬起来，舔着我儿子漂亮的小手里捧来的水。
当水喝光时，比利跳起来，跑回家里。我跟着他回到我们关紧的水龙头那儿。比利把它开到最大，一股细小的水流开始缓慢流出。他跪在那儿，让水一滴一滴地缓慢注满他的临时“水杯”。当他跋涉回来时，我正站在他面前。他的小眼睛里满是泪水。
“我没有浪费水。”只听他说。
当我脸上滚落的泪珠碰到地面时，突然有其它的水珠汇入……更多的水珠……更多的水珠。
我想说，那天下的雨救了我们的农场……正如一个小男孩的行为救了另一个小生命一样。
附：原文 It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain in almost a month. The crops were dying. The creeks and streams were long gone back into the earth. If we didn't see some rain soon, we would lose everything. It was on this day that I learned the true lesson of sharing and witnessed the only miracle I have seen with my own eyes. Iwas in the kitchen making lunch when I saw my six-year old son, Billy, walkingtoward the woods. Minutes after he disappeared into the woods, he came running out again, toward the house. Iwent back to making sandwiches, thinking that whatever task he had been doing was completed. Moments later, however, he was once again walking in that slow purposeful stride toward the woods. This activity went on for an hour: walk carefully to the woods, run back to the house. Finally I couldn't take it any longer and I crept out of the house and followed him onhis journey. AsI leaned in to spy on him, I saw the most amazing sight. Several large deer loomed in front of him. Billy walked right upto them. And I saw a tiny fawn lying on the ground, obviously suffering from dehydration and heat exhaustion, lift its head with great effort to lap up the water cupped inmy beautiful boy's hand. When the water was gone, Billy jumped up to run back to the house. I followed him back to a spigot that we had shut off the water to. Billy opened it all the way up and a small trickle began to creep out. He knelt there, letting the drip, drip slowly fill up his makeshift "cup." When he stood up and began the trek back, I was there in front of him. His little eyes just filled with tears. "I'm not wasting," was all he said. Asthe tears that rolled down my face began to hit the ground, they were suddenly joined by other drops…… more drops…… and more. All I can say is that the rain that came that day saved our farm…… just like the actions of one little boy saved another. |
