约翰正在等他素未谋面的知心女友，那个佩带玫瑰的女孩。十三个月前，在弗罗里达的图书馆里，约翰顺手从书架上拿起一本书，发现自己被书页空白处的眉批脚注深深吸引。柔和的线条反映出的是头脑的深思熟虑和真知灼见。
在此书的扉页，他找到了前主人的姓名，霍利斯梅奈尔小姐。经时费力，他找到了她的地址。他给她写了一封信，介绍自己并邀请她通信。
在接下来的一年零一个月中，通过通信，两人逐渐了解，一场浪漫悄然而生。约翰请求一张玉照，遭到拒绝。她觉得如果在乎，长相并不重要。后来他们定下了第一次约会，下午七点在纽约的中心车站。
“你会认出我的。”她写道：“我将在西服的翻领上佩带一朵玫瑰。”于是，七点整，他在纽约车站上寻找佩带玫瑰的女孩。
一个穿绿西服的年轻女子朝他走来，她身段修长，蓝目如花。几乎难以自控，他朝她迈出一步。正在那时，他看到了霍利斯梅奈尔小姐，一个四十大几的女人。女孩迅速走开。他感觉此时自己被撕为两半，如此热切地想追随美女，又如此强烈地渴望与自己真正心灵相契的女人相见。
他没有犹豫，挺直胸膛说：“我是约翰，你一定是梅奈尔小姐。很高兴你能来见我，我能请你吃饭吗？”
女人微笑着回答：“孩子，我根本不知道这里边的事。那个绿衣少女求我把这朵玫瑰佩带在外衣上，并告诉我如果你请我出去吃饭，我就告诉你她正在对面的餐馆里等你。她说这是一种考验。”
不难悟出梅奈尔小姐的智慧，只有通过对其貌不扬的人的反映，才能够看出一颗真心。

John was waiting for the girl whose heart he knew, but whose face he didn’t, the girl with the rose. Thirteen months ago, in a Florida library he took a book off the shelf and found himself intrigued with the notes in the margin. The soft handwriting reflected a thoughtful soul and insightful mind.
In front of the book, he discovered the previous owner’s name, Miss Hollis Maynell. With time and effort he located her address. He wrote her a letter introducing himself and inviting her to correspond. During the next year and one-month the two grew to know each other through the mail. A Romance was budding. John requested a photograph, but she refused. She felt that if he really cared, it wouldn't matter what she looked like. Later they scheduled their first meeting-7:00 pm at Grand Central Station in New York. "You'll recognize me, " she wrote, "by the red rose I'll be wearing on my lapel." So at 7:00 he was in the station looking for the girl with the red rose. A young woman in a green suit was coming toward him, her figure long and slim and her eyes were blue as flowers. Almost uncontrollably he made one step closer to her, and just at this moment he saw Hollis Maynell-a woman well past 40. The girl was walking quickly away. He felt as though he split in two, so keen was his desire to follow her, and yet so deep was his longing for the woman whose spirit had truly companioned him and upheld his own. He did not hesitate. He squared his shoulders and said, "I’m John, and you must be Miss Maynell. I am so glad you could meet me; may I take you to dinner?" The woman smiled, "I don’t know what this is about, son," she answered, "but the young lady in the green suit begged me to wear this rose on my coat. And she said if you were to ask me out to dinner, I should tell you that she is waiting for you in the restaurant across the street. She said it was some kind of test!" It’s not difficult to admire Miss Maynell’s wisdom. The true nature of a heart is seen in it's response to the unattractive. |
