赢了比赛输了奖品

科迪和妹妹四月走进了一家宠物店，店面很小，宠物很少。他俩一进门，店主史密斯先生便打招呼。四月说：“我们想买一只狗。” “啊，我们的店不大，只有两条狗可卖。”史密斯先生告诉她。

他们要求史密斯先生带他们去看看这两只狗。一只是大型的斗牛犬，名叫巴斯特。另一只是小巧的吉娃娃，名叫茶杯。四月想买茶杯，但科迪想要巴斯特。他们出去讨论了一下，还是没能达成共识。四月提议两人跑步回家，谁赢了比赛，谁来挑选狗。

科迪同意了，他告诉四月她的鞋带松了。趁她一低头，他领先跑了出去。科迪跑得很卖力气，因为他真的想要那只斗牛犬。他回头一看，四月被远远地甩在了后面，连个影子也没有。他很累但很开心。他知道自己赢了。四月几分钟以后才赶到。她向科迪表示祝贺，然后二人一同回到了宠物店。然而，当他们到达时，店里只剩下了茶杯。他们问史密斯先生：巴斯特哪儿去了？

史密斯先生解释道：他俩走后没几分钟，来了两个男孩，把巴斯特买走了。

科迪看了一眼四月，她在掩饰着自己的微笑。科迪叹了口气，转向史密斯先生说：“有时你赢了比赛，却输了奖品。”他苦笑着说：“我们买吉娃娃。”

Cody and his sister April went into a local pet store. It was a very small pet store that didn’t have many animals. The owner of the shop, Mr Smith, greeted Cody and April when they entered. April said, “We would like to buy a dog.” “Ah, well, our shop is not very big.” Mr Smith told her, “So we only have two dogs to choose from.”

They asked Mr Smith to show them the dogs. Mr Smith took them to see the two dogs. One was a big Bulldog named Buster. The other was a tiny Chihuahua named Teacup. April wanted Teacup, but Cody wanted Buster. They walked outside to discuss. They didn’t agree on a dog. April suggested they raced home for it. The one who won the race could choose the dog.

Cody agreed, and then told April that her shoelace was loose. When April looked down, he ran off to get a head start. Cody ran as hard as he could because he really wanted that bulldog. When he looked back, he found April was so far behind that he could see her. Cody finally got home. He was tired but happy. He knew he was the winner. April arrived a few minutes later. She congratulated him and they returned to the pet store together. However, when they arrived, they only saw Teacup. They asked Mr Smith where Buster was.

Mr Smith gave them an explanation that a few minutes after Cody and April left, two boys walked in and bought the Bulldog.

Cody looked April, and she held back a smile. Cody sighed and turned back to Mr Smith, “Sometimes you win the race, but not the prize!”Cody smiled sadly. “We’ll take the Chihuahua, please.”
