Last year during the English class, I sat in front of a young bright boy named George. Though possibly he had the greatest potentials in our class, he was hardly motivated. He would forget to write a composition, leave his book at home, or any numbers of things weakening his learning. Our teacher, Mr M, finally failed him once, which, instead of inspiring George to do better, had the opposite effect. He became discouraged, and later failed to finish homework again and again. I know this is not only the case for George, because after talking to many students, I know it happens a lot. Aside from affecting George, failures imposed on him caused the classroom atmosphere became negative. Whenever Mr M tried to talk to him about his grades, every kid grew silent, listening to our teacher blaming him. We would wait for George’s reaction: a shout, a hit to wall, or simple silence. No one wanted to anger our teacher, and our teacher refused to do anything fun. What is the right thing for a teacher to do? Instead of punching students when they do poorly, a teacher should reward them when they do well. This brings a positive atmosphere to the classroom. Every student will experience joy, like the kid who doesn’t understand a maths question but receives some rewards when he gets it. It is reasonable to believe that it is more pleasurable to reward a successful student than to fail a struggling one. Every student could see the suffering on Mr M’s face when he gave George another bad grade. Mr M would be angry for the rest of the day, his happy character disappearing. The opposite is true, too. When rewarding students, the teacher smiles, and the classroom brightens. Failure is a negative tool that has a negative effect on the classroom. Failure can press a classroom. Teachers need to be forgiving and encouraging. Making the classroom a happy learning environment is important. |
