狐狸和马

一个农民有一匹忠实的老马，它老得再也干不动活了。因此主人不想给它任何吃的东西了，就说：“我肯定再也用不上你了，但我仍然为了你好，如果你能证明自己足够强壮，给我抓一只狮子回来，我就收留你。但是现在，离开我的马厩吧。”就这样，他把老马赶到了旷野。
马很伤心，它到森林里去，以稍稍避开恶劣的天气。在森林里它遇到了一只狐狸。狐狸说；“你为什么耷拉着脑袋，独自走来走去的？”
“唉，”老马答道，“贪婪和忠诚不能在一个屋檐下相安无事。我的主人忘记了这些年来我为他所做的一切，因为我再也拉一动犁了，他将不再给我吃的，并把我赶了出来。”
“没有给你一个机会吗？”狐狸问。
“机会是有，但不适合我。他说如果我足够强壮能抓回一只狮子来，就收留我。但他当然知道我做不到。”
狐狸说：“我来帮你。躺下，伸展四肢，装死，千万别动。”
马依计而行，狐狸去找狮子，狮子的洞穴离此不远，狐狸说：“那边躺着一匹死马，随我来，你会有一顿大餐。”
狮子跟着狐狸来到了马身边，狐狸说：“毕竟，你在这里吃它会很不舒服。让我说，我用尾巴把它拴在你身上，你把它托回洞穴，慢慢享用。”
这个建议让狮子很高兴。为了让狐狸把马结实地捆在自己身上，他躺好，一言不发。但是狐狸转动狮子的四肢，用马尾巴把它们捆了个结结实实，再大的力气也挣脱不开。完成这一切后，狐狸拍了拍马的肩膀说：“白马，使劲拉。”
马立刻一跃而起，托着狮子走了。狮子开始咆哮，林子里的鸟惊恐地飞上天去，但马任它咆哮，托着它穿过田野，一直到了主人的门口。当主人看到狮子时，他变聪明了，对马说：“我会收留你并很好地待你。”他把这匹马一直喂养到死。
附：原文 The Fox and the Horse A peasant had afaithful horse which had grown old and could do no more work, so his master nolonger wanted to give him anything to eat and said, "I can certainly makeno more use of you, but still I mean well by you, and if you prove yourselfstill strong enough to bring me a lion here, I will maintain you. But for nowget out of my stable." And with that he chased him into the open field. The horse was sad,and went to the forest to seek a little protection there from the weather.There the fox met him and said, "Why do you hang your head so, and go aboutall alone?" "Alas,"replied the horse, "greed and loyalty do not dwell together in one house.My master has forgotten what services I have performed for him for so manyyears, and because I can no longer plow well, he will give me no more food, andhas driven me out." "Withoutgiving you a chance?" asked the fox. "The chancewas a bad one. He said, if I were still strong enough to bring him a lion, hewould keep me, but he well knows that I cannot do that." The fox said,"I will help you. Just lie down, stretch out as if you were dead, and donot stir." The horse did whatthe fox asked, and then the fox went to the lion, who had his den not far off,and said, "A dead horse is lying out there. Just come with me, and you canhave a rich meal." The lion went withhim, and when they were both standing by the horse the fox said, "Afterall, it is not very comfortable for you here - I tell you what -I will fastenit to you by the tail, and then you can drag it into your cave and eat it inpeace." This advicepleased the lion. He positioned himself, and in order that the fox might tiethe horse fast to him, he kept completely quiet. But the fox tied the lion'slegs together with the horse's tail, and twisted and fastened everything sowell and so strongly that no amount of strength could pull it loose. When hehad finished his work, he tapped the horse on the shoulder and said,"Pull, white horse, pull!" Then up sprang thehorse at once, and pulled the lion away with him. The lion began to roar sothat all the birds in the forest flew up in terror, but the horse let him roar,and drew him and dragged him across the field to his master's door. When the mastersaw the lion, he was of a better mind, and said to the horse, "You shallstay with me and fare well." And he gave him plenty to eat until he died.
