爱的礼物

“我可以看看我的孩子吗？”幸福地新妈妈问道。
怀抱襁褓，她打开层层包裹，看着那张小脸，她倒吸了一口冷气。医生迅速转过脸去，向医院高高的窗外望去。这个婴儿生来没有耳朵。
时间证明他的听力没有问题。只是有损相貌。当有一天，他从学校匆匆回家，一头扑进母亲的怀抱时，她叹了口气，知道他的一生将会是伤心连连。
他脱口而出：“一个男孩，一个大个子……他和我叫畸形人。”
他长大了，虽不幸，但很漂亮。同学们都喜欢他，要不是耳朵，他可能当上了班长。他培养了自己的特长，是文学和音乐方面的。
“但你可以和其它人交往啊。”妈妈责备说，但她感觉内心深处是温柔的体贴。
孩子的父亲和家庭医生谈了一次……“还有办法吗？”
“我认为我可以给他移植一对外耳，如果能够弄到的话。”医生说。随后就是开始寻找一个愿意为年轻人做出如此巨大牺牲的人。
两年过去了。一天，父亲对儿子说：“孩子，准备去医院。我和妈妈找到了一个人，她愿意捐出你所需要的耳朵。但要保密。”
手术非常成功，一个新人诞生了。他的特长发展成天赋，从高中到大学一路伴随着鲜花和掌声。
后来，他结了婚，进入了外交行业。一天，他问父亲：“谁给我捐的耳朵？谁给了我这么多？我做什么也报答不了他/她的恩情。”
“我想你也报答不了，”父亲说：“但协议是不能告诉你……现在还不能。”
岁月保守着这个重大秘密，但这一天终于来了。那是一个儿子经历的最黑暗的日子。他和父亲站在妈妈的棺材前。缓慢地，温柔地，父亲伸出一只手，撩起了妈妈浓密的红棕色头发，露出了一个秘密：妈妈没有外耳。
“妈妈说她很高兴自己从不让人剪头发，”父亲轻声说：“没有人会认为妈妈不漂亮了，对吗？”

"Can Isee my baby?" the happy new mother asked.
When the bundle was nestled in her arms and she moved the fold of cloth to look upon histiny face, she gasped. The doctor turned quickly and looked out the tall hospital window. The baby had been born without ears.
Time proved that the baby's hearing was perfect. It was only his appearance that was marred. When he rushed home from school one day and flung himself into his mother's arms, she sighed, knowing that his life was to be a succession of heartbreaks.
He blurted out the tragedy. "A boy, a big boy...called me a freak."
He grew up, handsome for his misfortune. A favorite with his fellow students, he might have been class president, but forthat. He developed a gift, a talent for literature and music.
"But you might mingle with other young people," his mother reproved him, but felt a kindness in her heart.
The boy's father had a session with the family physician... "Could nothing be done?"
"I believe I could graft on a pair of outer ears, if they could be procured,"the doctor decided. Whereupon the search began for a person who would make such a sacrifice for a young man.
Two years went by. One day, his father said tothe son, "You're going to the hospital, son. Mother and I have someone who will donate the ears you need. But it's a secret."
The operation was a brilliant success, and a new person emerged. His talents blossomed into genius, and school and college became a series of triumphs.
Later he married and entered the diplomatic service. One day, he asked his father,"Who gave me the ears? Who gave me so much? I could never do enough for him or her."
"I do not believe you could," said the father, "but the agreement was that you are not to know...not yet."
The years kept their profound secret, but theday did come. One of the darkest days that ever pass through a son. He stood with his father over his mother's casket. Slowly, tenderly, the father stretched forth a hand and raised the thick, reddish brown hair to reveal the mother had no outer ears.
"Mother said she was glad she never let her hair be cut," his father whispered gently, "and nobody ever thought mother less beautiful, did they?" |
