心有多远，你就能走多远

我过去常常从厨房的窗子观察她，在操场上穿梭于男孩子中间，她的身材稍显瘦小。学校在马路对面，课间休息时，我总是在家里观看他们。一大群孩子中，只有她惹我注目。
我还记得看她第一天打篮球。我好奇地看着她在其它孩子周围跑来跑去，她成功地跳起投篮，篮球从孩子们头顶上飞过，进入篮框。其它的孩子们总是试图阻止她，但无一人成功。
我开始注意到她在其它时间总是手里拿着球，一个人训练。她反复地练习运球和投球，有时直到天黑。一天，我问她为什么要这样刻苦地训练。她直视我的目光，毫不迟疑地说：“我想上大学。我唯一的出路是拿到奖学金。我喜欢篮球。我想如果我篮球打得足够好，就能拿到奖学金。我要在大学里打篮球。我想做最好的。爸爸告诉我：心中有目标，风雨不折腰。然后她笑笑，朝球场跑去，重复着我看了一遍又一遍的常规动作。
我不得不说，她决心很大。我看着她从初中练到高中。每周她都带领她的校队夺冠。
在高中的某一天，我看见她坐在草地上，双手抱着头。我穿过马路，来到她身旁，坐在清凉的草地上。我静静地问出什么事了。“没什么。”回答很温柔，“我太矮了。”教练告诉她，以她五尺五的身高，她不可能进一流的球队，更不可能拿到奖学金。因此，她应该停止做大学梦。
她的心碎了，感觉到她的失望，我的喉咙也一阵阵发紧。我问她是否和父亲谈过这些。她把头从双臂中抬起，告诉我父亲说那些教练都说错了。他们根本不懂梦想的力量。父亲告诉她：如果真想去好大学里打篮球，如果真想拿奖学金，能阻挡她的只有一件事，那就是她自己的态度。父亲再次告诫她：“心中有目标，风雨不折腰。”
第二年，当她和队友去参加北加利福尼亚冠军赛时，她被一个大学招募人员看中。她真的拿到了奖学金，全额的，进了NCAA女子篮球队的甲级队。她可以上大学了，实现了她多年来一直为之努力的梦想。
心中有目标，风雨不折腰。这句话千真万确。

I used to watch her from my kitchen window; she seemed so small as she muscled her way through the crowd of boys on the playground. The school was across the street from our home and I would often watch the kids as they played during recess. A sea ofchildren, and yet to me, she stood out from them all. I remember the first day I saw her playing basketball. I watched in wonder as she ran circles around the other kids. She managed to shoot jump shots just over their heads and into the net. The boys always tried to stop her but no one could. I began to notice her at other times, basketball in hand, playing alone. She would practice dribbling and shooting over and over again, sometimes until dark. One day Iasked her why she practiced so much. She looked directly in my eyes and without a moment of hesitation she said,” I want to go to college. The only way I cango is if I get a scholarship. I like basketball. I decided that if I were good enough, I would get a scholarship. I am going to play college basketball. Iwant to be the best. My Daddy told me if the dream is big enough, the facts don't count." Then she smiled and ran towards the court to recap the routine I had seen over and over again. Well, I had togive it to her--- she was determined. I watched her through those junior high years and into high school. Every week, she led her varsity team to victory. One day in her senior year, I saw her sitting in the grass, head cradled in her arms. I walkedacross the street and sat down in the cool grass beside her. Quietly I asked what was wrong. "Oh, nothing," came to a soft reply. "I'm justtoo short." The coach told her that at"5'5" she would probably never get to play for a top ranked team-- much less offered a scholarship-- soshe should stop dreaming about college. She was heartbroken and I felt my own throat tighten as I sensed her disappointment. Iasked her if she had talked to her dad about it yet. She lifted her head fromher hands and told me that her father said those coaches were wrong. They just didn't understand the power of a dream. He told her that if she really wanted to play for a good college, if she truly wanted a scholarship, that nothing could stop her except one thing-- her own attitude. He told her again," if the dream is big enough, the facts don't count." The next year, asshe and her team went to the Northern California Championship game, she was seen by a college recruiter. She was indeed offered a scholarship, a full ride,to a Division I, NCAA women's basketball team. She was going to get the college education that she had dreamed of and worked toward for all those years. It's true: If the dream is big enough, the facts don't count. |
