我亲爱的克莱米：

        你从马德拉斯写来的信中，你写道我使你的生活丰富多彩。这些话对我弥足珍贵，给了我无法用语言表达的快乐。因为如果设个爱情账户的话，我对你的亏欠太多了……没有词汇能够表达这些年来与你心心相印的感觉。

        时间过得真快，我们一起经历了如此多的风风雨雨，多事之秋，数不清的不幸和可怕的时光，眼看我们共同积聚的财富日益辉煌，真是让人开心！

My darling Clemmie,

In your letter from Madras you wrote some words very dear to me,about my having enriched your life. I cannot tell you what pleasure this gave me, because I always feel so overwhelmingly in your debt, if there can beaccounts in love.... What it has been to me to live all these years in your heart and companionship no phrases can convey.
Time passes swiftly, but is it not joyous to seehow great and growing is the treasure we have gathered together, amid stormsand stresses of so many eventful and to millions tragic and terrible years?
