表面花不发，地下果丰硕

上周末我和老公整理花园，准备过冬。到上周六，只剩下最后一项任务：挖出大丽花的块茎。经过上周一场严霜的摧残，大丽花叶子虚弱，黑黑的，很难看。

和许多蔬菜一样，今年对于大丽花可不是好年景。十几棵漂亮的植株上只收获了寥寥几朵花。我想：如果植株不能开花，地下茎也很可能长不好，似乎不值得受累挖出来明年再种。但最后我还是改变了主意。剪掉枯枝，把铁锹插进土里。我很吃惊地挖到一大块健康地块茎，比去年任何一块的两倍都大。虽然环境条件不适合开花，但植株默默地积蓄下能量，为我们结出了好果实。

这些大丽花引起我的深思：对于一些农民来说，2012年不是好年景，这一年以艰难和不确定为标志。每个月我们都能听到农场因无力继续经营而关闭的消息。许多其它农场也面临困境，压力很大。我们就要过感恩节了，此时，许多人听到了需要感恩的召唤。这些大丽花使我们相信：当到了最困难的阶段，当我们最大的努力收效甚微时，一些好的情况正在地下潜滋暗长，等待出头之日。

这就是希望的本质。对于我来说，在艰难时候，希望本身就是一种值得珍视的天赐之福。

Last weekend my husband and I began to put our garden to bed for winter. By Saturday afternoon the last remaining task was to dig up the dahlia tubers. A hard frost last week had turned the dahlia leaves weak and black, quite unattractive.

As with many of our vegetables, this was not a good year for dahlias. I got only a handful of flowers off a dozen beautiful plants. I thought if the plants could not flower, the tubers under the soil were likely in poor shape; digging them up for next year seemed not worth the trouble. But eventually I changed my mind, cut back the dead leaves, and put my spade into the soil. I was surprised to find a huge clump of healthy tubers, twice as big as any from last year. Even though the conditions were not good for flowering, the plants in the less lucky environment have saved their energy silently, and grown good fruits for us.

Those dahlias got me thinking. For some farmers, 2012 was not a good year; it has been one marked by hardship and uncertainty. Every month we heard of farms closing because they could no longer afford to farm. Many others faced difficulties, and the stress was painful. Yet here we are, approaching thanksgiving, a time when many of us hear the call to give thanks. The dahlias made us consider that when things are most difficult, when our best efforts have produced little, it is possible that something good yet grows in silence, waiting quietly beneath its surface for its big day.

This is the nature of hope. It seems to me that in hard times a sense of hope itself is a blessing that deserves to be valued.
