在东部一所很大的大学校园里，期末考试进入了最后一天。在一座大楼的台阶上，一群工程学的大四学生聚在一起，谈论着几分钟后就要开始的考试。
他们脸上写满自信。这是最后一场考试，接下来是毕业典礼和投入工作。 一些人谈论着他们已经找到的工作，一些人谈论着他们即将找到的工作，有了四年大学做保证，他们觉得已经准备好了去征服世界。 他们知道，即将到来的考试将会轻而易举。 教授说过可以随意带任何书籍和笔记。 只要求考试时不能交头接耳。 学生们兴高采烈地走进教室，教授分发了试卷。 当学生们发现只有五道论述题时，他们笑得更灿烂了。 三个小时过去了，教授开始收卷。 学生们脸上的自信不见了。 他们满脸惊恐。 他们手拿试卷，鸦雀无声，教授面向大家。 他扫视了一眼面前张张忧心忡忡的脸，然后问道：“有多少人做完了这五道题？” 没有一人举手。 “有多少人做完了四道？” 仍然无人举手。 “有多少人做完了三道，两道？” 学生们在座位上不安地骚动起来。 “那么，一道呢？肯定有人做完了一道题。” 全班依然保持沉默。教授放下试卷，说：“这和我预料的完全一样。” “我只想让你们铭记：即使你们完成了四年工程学学习，关于这一题目你们还有很多不懂的东西。你们回答不了的这些问题，在日常实践中相当普遍。” 然后，他面带微笑，接着说：“这次考试你们全部通过，但要记住，你们现在虽然大学毕业了，但你们的教育才刚刚开始。” 岁月模糊了这位教授的名字，但他给我们上的这一课却永远清晰。 附：原文
So Much to Learn It was the last day of final examinations in a large Eastern university.
On the steps of one building, a group of engineering seniors huddled,discussing the exam due to begin in a few minutes.
On their faces was confidence. This was their last exam — then on to commencement and jobs.
Some talked of jobs they already had; others of jobs they would get.
With all this assurance of four years of college, they felt ready and able to conquer the world. The approaching exam, they knew, would be a snap.
The professor had said they could bring any books or notes they wanted.
Requesting only that they did not talk to each other during the test.
Jubilantly they entered into the classroom. The professor passed out the papers.
And smiles broadened as the students noted there were only five essay-type questions.
Three hours passed. Then the professor began to collect the papers.
The students no longer looked confident.
On their faces was a frightened expression.
No one spoke as, papers in hand, the professor faced the class.
He surveyed the worried faces before him, then asked: “how many completed all five questions?”
Not a hand was raised.
“How many answered four?”
Still no hands. “Three? Two?”
The students shifted restlessly in their seats.
“One, then? Certainly somebody finished one.”
But the class remained silent. The professor put down the papers. “that is exactly what I expected,” he said.
“I just want to impress upon you that, even though you have completed four years of engineering.
There are still many things about the subject you don’t know.
These questions you could not answer are relatively common in everyday practice.”
Then, smiling, he added: “you will all pass this course, but remember — even though you are now college graduates, your education has just begun.”
The years have obscured the name of this professor, but not the lesson he taught. |
